Candle bush (latin: Senna alata (L.) Roxb.) is a fast-growing, evergreen perennial shrub belonging to the Fabaceae family. It is recognized globally not only for its striking appearance, resembling yellow candles, but also for its significant role as a medicinal plant in various agricultural and traditional medical systems.
Originally native to the tropical regions of the Americas, this species is now widely distributed throughout the pantropical areas of Africa, Asia, and the Pacific. The cultivation of this crop is strictly limited to tropical and subtropical climates where frost is non-existent, as it requires stable high temperatures and consistent humidity levels for optimal growth.
Botanically, the candle bush exhibits a robust structure, often growing to heights of up to four meters. It is characterized by large, pinnate leaves that fold up at night. The most distinct feature is its inflorescence—large, yellow, spike-like racemes that appear periodically throughout the year. The fruit consists of papery, winged pods containing numerous seeds.
From an agrotechnical standpoint, Senna alata thrives in fertile, well-draining soils with a neutral or slightly acidic pH. While it is relatively hardy, regular irrigation is essential during the establishment phase and periods of drought. Pruning is a critical management practice to maintain canopy health and promote the production of new leaves, which are the main commercial part of the plant.
