Tongue orchid

Tongue orchid (Serapias lingua) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Orchidaceae family. It is a terrestrial orchid primarily recognized for its unique floral architecture, where the labellum serves as a visual mimicry mechanism to attract specific pollinators common in its native habitat.

The plant is native to the Mediterranean basin, extending from Southern Europe to parts of North Africa. It thrives in diverse environments, ranging from coastal grasslands to open rocky slopes, which makes it highly adapted to climates characterized by mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers.

Botanically, the species is distinguished by its twin subterranean tubers, which are crucial for energy storage. The plant typically reaches a height of up to 40 centimeters, featuring narrow, basal leaves and a flower spike that showcases elongated, tongue-like petals in shades of deep red, pink, or brownish-purple.

Successful cultivation requires mimicry of its natural ecological conditions. The soil must be exceptionally well-draining, ideally a mix of loam, sand, and organic matter to prevent root rot. It demands a position in full sun to partial shade, with careful management of irrigation during the growth cycle to avoid saturating the soil during the summer dormancy phase.

Main agricultural and horticultural utilization is focused on botanical collections and specialized landscaping. Growers must remain vigilant against pests such as aphids and spider mites, which can proliferate in protected cultivation environments, as well as fungal pathogens that often attack the root system if moisture management is inconsistent.
