Blue moor grass

Blue moor grass (Sesleria heufleriana Schur) is a perennial ornamental grass species belonging to the Poaceae family. It is highly valued in horticulture for its neat, compact habit and its unique ability to remain green during the cooler months, making it an excellent structural plant.

The species originates from the mountainous regions of Central and Southeastern Europe. It naturally thrives in limestone-rich soils, often found in rocky slopes and woodland clearings. Its adaptability to such terrain makes it a robust candidate for cultivated garden environments with similar soil profiles.

Botanically, the plant forms dense tufts reaching about 40 to 50 centimeters in height. The foliage is distinctive, featuring a dark green upper surface and a pale, glaucous underside. The inflorescences emerge in late spring as dark, cylindrical, and compact spikes that provide a strong color contrast against the foliage.

Regarding cultivation, Sesleria heufleriana prefers well-draining soil and performs best in full sun to light shade. It is exceptionally hardy and drought-tolerant once established. Maintenance is straightforward, requiring only a spring cut-back to remove withered foliage and occasional division of older clumps to maintain plant vigor.

The primary use of this grass is in ornamental gardening for borders, mass planting, and rock gardens. It is rarely troubled by pests or diseases, provided that the soil is not prone to winter waterlogging. Its pest-resistant nature and low maintenance requirements make it a sustainable choice for contemporary landscape projects.
