Giant foxtail (Setaria faberi) is an annual grass species within the family Poaceae. While primarily recognized as a major invasive weed in row-crop production, it is taxonomically related to cultivated millets and is occasionally studied for its biomass potential in forage systems.
Originating from East Asia, this plant has spread extensively across temperate and subtropical regions worldwide. Its presence is most prominent in large-scale agricultural landscapes, particularly in North America, where it thrives in corn and soybean fields, competing aggressively for essential resources like nitrogen and water.
Botanically, it is a robust grass that grows between 0.5 to 1.5 meters tall. Its distinct features include leaves covered with short, soft hairs and a characteristic nodding panicle inflorescence. These seeds are produced in massive quantities, often exceeding thousands per plant, which facilitates its rapid colonization of disturbed habitats.
