Lebanese ironwort (Sideritis libanotica) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Lamiaceae family. Native to the mountainous regions of the Eastern Mediterranean, this species is naturally adapted to rocky slopes and limestone outcrops. It has historically been utilized by local populations for its medicinal properties and as a fragrant ingredient.
The botanical structure of the plant is defined by its erect, hairy stems that provide protection against extreme solar radiation and desiccation. The leaves are typically lanceolate or oval, and the small, yellow flowers are arranged in spike-like inflorescences. This structural configuration is a primary adaptation to surviving in arid, exposed high-altitude habitats.
Regarding climate and soil, this crop is highly xerophytic and requires full sun exposure to flourish. It thrives in well-drained, alkaline, or neutral soils that are rich in mineral content.
