Sideritis syriaca, commonly known as Syrian ironwort or Greek mountain tea, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Lamiaceae family. Renowned for its traditional use as a caffeine-free herbal tea, it has gained significant commercial interest due to its therapeutic properties, which include high levels of polyphenols, essential oils, and antioxidant compounds.
The plant is native to the rocky, mountainous regions of the Eastern Mediterranean, particularly the Balkans, Crete, and parts of the Middle East. It has evolved to thrive in harsh, dry environments with high altitude exposure. Today, it is cultivated commercially in regions with similar Mediterranean climates, where its resilience to heat and drought makes it an ideal crop for marginal lands.
Botanically, Sideritis syriaca is a subshrub characterized by its dense, silver-grey tomentose (woolly) hairs on both stems and leaves, which minimize moisture loss.
