The Mediterranean catchfly (Silene rubella) is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the Caryophyllaceae family. The species is native to the Mediterranean basin, stretching across Southern Europe and Northern Africa. Soil pH should ideally be neutral or slightly alkaline, as the species does not perform well in highly acidic, waterlogged conditions which often lead to root pathogens.

Typical pests include aphids and various lepidopteran larvae, which feed on the foliage and reproductive structures.
