Sea campion

Sea campion (lat. Silene uniflora) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Caryophyllaceae family. Known for its cushion-forming habit and bladder-like calyx, it is a popular choice for rock gardens and coastal landscaping due to its natural resilience and low-maintenance requirements.

Native to the coastal regions of Europe, the plant is naturally adapted to harsh environments, including cliffs, shingle beaches, and dunes. This evolutionary history makes it highly tolerant of salty air, wind exposure, and impoverished, free-draining substrates, which is a significant advantage for modern garden cultivation.

Botanically, it is characterized by succulent-like, glaucous leaves and white, five-petaled flowers that emerge from an inflated, striped calyx. The plant forms dense mats that can spread over time, providing excellent weed suppression and ground cover. Its root system is deep and sturdy, allowing it to anchor securely in stony soils.

Cultivation requirements focus primarily on light and drainage. Sea campion thrives in full sun and requires soil that does not retain excessive moisture. In garden settings, adding horticultural grit or coarse sand is essential to mimic its natural environment and prevent root rot. It does not require fertilization and prefers relatively poor soil conditions.

In terms of plant health, sea campion is generally robust. However, it may be susceptible to:

• Aphids, which can cluster on the flower buds.
• Root rot caused by poor soil drainage.
• Powdery mildew if planted in overcrowded or poorly ventilated areas.

The main horticultural use is in rock gardens, scree beds, or as a wall plant. It is an excellent choice for xeriscaping, as it maintains its aesthetic appeal throughout the growing season with minimal human intervention, provided the drainage is managed correctly.
