Water caltrop, scientifically known as Trapa natans, belongs to the Lythraceae family. This annual aquatic plant is widely recognized for its floating leaf rosettes and distinctive horned fruits, often referred to as "devil pods." It is a specialized crop that thrives in stagnant or slow-moving freshwater environments.
Originally native to warmer regions of Eurasia and Africa, the water caltrop has been cultivated for centuries, particularly in Asian agricultural systems. It is well-adapted to wetland habitats where it extracts nutrients directly from nutrient-rich sediments. The plant acts as a key component in aquatic ecosystems, providing shelter for micro-fauna.
Botanically, the plant develops a submerged stem anchored by roots in the mud, while its surface leaves are arranged in a dense, symmetric rosette. Successful cultivation requires a warm climate with a long frost-free period and specific water depth management, typically ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 meters. Soil fertility is vital, as the plant relies on organic-rich mud for its rapid biomass production. Seed preservation is critical for propagation, as seeds must remain submerged in damp substrate to remain viable.
The water caltrop is economically significant as a food crop; the seeds are rich in carbohydrates and can be processed into flour or consumed directly after boiling.
