Reeves' skimmia (Skimmia reevesiana) is a compact evergreen shrub belonging to the Rutaceae family. Unlike its dioecious relatives, this species is self-fertile, producing both flowers and fruit on a single plant. It is highly valued in horticulture for its year-round aesthetic appeal, characterized by glossy foliage and vibrant berries.
The plant originates from the mountainous regions of China. In its native habitat, it grows in the understory of forests, which dictates its preference for shaded environments. Globally, it is cultivated primarily as an ornamental plant in temperate gardens, conservatories, or as a container-grown specimen in regions with harsh winters.
Botanically, this shrub is characterized by its slow growth rate, reaching a maximum height of about 60–80 centimeters. Its leaves are leathery, lanceolate, and deep green, emitting a citrus-like fragrance when crushed. The spring bloom consists of small, creamy-white, fragrant flowers, which transition into conspicuous red berries that persist throughout the winter months.
Cultivation requires specific environmental conditions to thrive. The soil must be acidic, well-draining, and rich in organic matter. Partial shade is essential, as direct exposure to harsh afternoon sun often causes leaf scorch. Consistent moisture management is critical; however, the soil must never be waterlogged, as this is the primary cause of root failure.
