Skimmia repens

Skimmia repens, commonly known as creeping skimmia, is an evergreen, low-growing shrub belonging to the Rutaceae family. It is distinct for its prostrate growth habit, which allows it to form dense, lush mats of foliage. This characteristic makes it highly sought after in professional landscaping for its year-round appeal, featuring shiny leaves and vibrant winter berries.

The species originates from the temperate forested regions of East Asia, primarily thriving in Japan and parts of the Russian Far East. As an understory plant in its natural habitat, it has evolved to thrive in environments with dappled sunlight, high atmospheric humidity, and protective canopy cover, which shelters it from extreme meteorological fluctuations.

Botanically, Skimmia repens displays creeping, woody stems that root into the soil, allowing the plant to spread effectively. The foliage consists of alternate, coriaceous leaves that emit a pleasant aromatic scent when crushed. During the spring, the shrub produces dense panicles of small, fragrant flowers. As a dioecious species, it requires both male and female plants in close proximity to ensure the production of its signature bright red, long-lasting berries.
