The native range of this species spans the tropical coastal areas of South and Southeast Asia, as well as Northern Australia. It thrives in muddy estuaries and river deltas, playing a vital role in coastal protection by anchoring the sediment and mitigating the impact of tidal energy and storm surges on the shoreline.
Botanically, the tree is noted for its specialized root system, known as pneumatophores, which rise vertically from the anaerobic mud to facilitate gas exchange. The flowers are distinctive for their prominent red stamens and nocturnal opening cycle, which is evolutionarily synchronized with the activity of nectar-feeding bats, their primary pollinators.
Cultivation practices for this species focus on site selection rather than traditional agricultural inputs. Success depends on maintaining the natural tidal flushing regime and soil salinity levels. Planting is generally carried out by managing wild populations or nurseries where seedlings are raised in tidal enclosures before being transplanted to intertidal mudflats.

The fruits are edible and possess a distinctive sour flavor often used in traditional cooking, while the timber is valued for its lightweight properties in local construction.
