Vitis cinerea (Vitis cinerea var. helleri), often referred to as the greyback grape or Spanish grape, is a species of woody vine in the Vitaceae family. It is a wild grapevine noted for its distinctive appearance, characterized by the grey, felt-like pubescence covering the undersides of its leaves and its young stems, which provides protection against environmental stress.
The native habitat of this species is found in the southeastern and central United States, where it thrives in river bottoms and damp forest environments. It is a highly vigorous plant, capable of climbing tall trees and establishing extensive root systems in moist, alluvial soils, reflecting its evolutionary adaptation to floodplain ecosystems.
