The native range of the small bur-reed spans the temperate and boreal regions of the Northern Hemisphere, including parts of Europe, Russia, and North America. It is typically found in stagnant or slow-moving waters such as ponds, ditches, and shallow lake margins. The species is well-adapted to environments where nutrient-rich silt provides the necessary substrate for its creeping rhizomes to anchor.
