Corn spurry (Latin: Spergula arvensis L.) is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the Caryophyllaceae family. While often viewed as an invasive weed in conventional tillage, it is recognized in specific agricultural systems as a valuable emergency forage crop, particularly effective on poor, acidic, and sandy soils where more sensitive crops struggle to establish.

Originally native to Eurasia, corn spurry has achieved a near-global distribution due to its high adaptability. Its range includes various temperate regions, where it has historically been utilized by farmers as a quick-growing supplement to traditional pastures. The plant's ability to thrive in cool, moist climates makes it an excellent candidate for early-season grazing or green manure.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by its sprawling or upright habit, typically reaching a height of up to 40 cm. It features slender, linear leaves arranged in whorls and delicate white flowers. Its root system is shallow but dense, allowing it to efficiently extract nutrients and moisture from the top layer of sandy substrates, which is a significant competitive advantage in nutrient-poor environments.

Regarding agronomic requirements, corn spurry thrives in temperate climates and is highly tolerant of soil acidity. Cultivation practices include shallow soil preparation and early broadcasting of seeds. The crop requires very little maintenance, though it responds well to initial moisture during germination. Due to its rapid growth cycle, it is often utilized as a catch crop to maximize land utility between main harvest seasons.

The primary use of corn spurry is as high-quality forage for livestock, providing essential nutrients early in the spring. It is highly palatable to cattle and sheep, whether fed fresh or conserved as silage. The plant is generally hardy; however, it can occasionally suffer from powdery mildew or fungal pathogens in stagnant, overly wet conditions. Integrated pest management and proper crop rotation are sufficient to keep disease levels within acceptable agricultural limits.
