Sphenomeris biflora is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Lindsaeaceae family. Often recognized as a distinctive fern species, it is valued for its delicate fronds and its ability to thrive in specific ecological niches where traditional ornamental plants might struggle.

The plant originates from the tropical regions of the Pacific, including parts of East Asia such as Taiwan and Japan, as well as various oceanic islands. Its natural habitat consists of humid forest floors, shaded rocky crevices, and areas with consistent precipitation throughout the year.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by its finely dissected, decompound fronds that have a lacy, elegant appearance. The creeping rhizome allows the plant to form dense colonies, effectively covering the ground in its natural environment. Reproduction is mediated by sori, which are strategically placed along the leaf margins.

In terms of horticulture, Sphenomeris biflora requires a well-draining, acidic substrate rich in organic matter. High humidity is crucial for its development, and the species is highly sensitive to soil desiccation. It prefers partial shade and should be protected from harsh, direct sunlight which can scorch its fragile foliage.

While primarily used in tropical landscaping, this fern also finds a place in specialized greenhouse collections. Common pests include aphids and mites, which can be managed by maintaining optimal humidity and good air circulation. Diseases are generally minimal, provided the root zone remains aerated and is not subjected to waterlogging.
