Spurge laurel

Spurge laurel (lat. Daphne laureola L.) is a shade-tolerant evergreen shrub that belongs to the Thymelaeaceae family. It is known for its leathery, glossy leaves which resemble those of the laurel plant. This perennial shrub provides excellent structural interest in garden beds throughout the year, maintaining its foliage even in the coldest months.

Native to parts of Western and Southern Europe, as well as North Africa, this plant thrives in the understory of broadleaf woodlands. It naturally prefers well-drained, lime-rich soils and mild climates. Due to its evolutionary adaptation to low-light environments, it is considered one of the best evergreen shrubs for gardens dominated by large trees or structures.

The plant typically grows to a height of 1 to 1.5 meters, displaying small, fragrant greenish-yellow flowers in late winter or early spring. It is critically important for gardeners to note that all parts of this plant are poisonous. Handling the plant can cause skin irritation or blisters, so protective gloves are mandatory during pruning or maintenance tasks to avoid allergic reactions or toxic contact.

Cultivation requires fertile, well-drained soil that does not hold excess moisture. The plant is sensitive to waterlogging, which often results in root rot. When planning a site, choose a location sheltered from harsh, drying winds. Maintenance is generally low, involving occasional watering during dry spells and the application of organic mulch to keep the roots cool and moist.
