Scarlet hedge-nettle

Scarlet hedge-nettle (Stachys coccinea) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Lamiaceae family. Unlike many other species of the Stachys genus, which are primarily grown for their foliage, this particular plant is valued for its striking, tubular red flowers that bring a Mediterranean or arid-land aesthetic to the garden.

Originating from the southwestern United States and Mexico, this plant is well-adapted to hot, dry climates. Its native habitat includes open woodlands, rocky slopes, and mountain canyons, where it thrives in well-drained, nutrient-poor soils under intense sunlight.

Botanically, the plant grows into a bushy clump reaching approximately 50 to 70 centimeters in height. Its leaves are serrated and slightly fuzzy, providing a good backdrop for the vivid scarlet spikes that bloom throughout the summer and into autumn. These blooms are highly sought after by hummingbirds and native bees.

Agricultural and horticultural success with this species depends on providing excellent drainage. While it is highly drought-tolerant once established, it cannot survive in standing water or damp, heavy soils. It requires a sunny location and benefits from light pruning after the initial bloom to encourage a second flush of flowers.

Common issues include root rot, which typically occurs due to overwatering or poorly drained soil. In terms of pests, aphids may occasionally congregate on the flower spikes during periods of high heat, though the plant is generally resilient. It is an excellent choice for xeriscaping, rock gardens, and naturalistic perennial borders.
