Staurogyne repens

Staurogyne repens is a highly valued aquatic plant belonging to the Acanthaceae family. Known for its compact growth habit and vibrant green foliage, it is widely recognized by aquascapers as one of the premier species for creating foreground carpets in freshwater aquarium layouts.

Originating from the Rio Cristalino region in the Amazon basin of Brazil, this plant has adapted to riverbank environments. Its natural habitat includes rocky substrates and areas with moderate water flow, which reflects its resilience and preference for nutrient-rich substrates in a domestic aquarium setting.

Botanically, Staurogyne repens is characterized by short, sturdy stems and leaves that vary in size based on light intensity. When cultivated submerged, it tends to stay low and crawl across the substrate, whereas emersed growth is faster and more upright. Regular pruning is essential to maintain its characteristic low-profile, bush-like appearance.

Successful cultivation requires specific environmental conditions. It thrives in tanks with:

• Strong lighting (PAR values sufficient for photosynthesis).
• Supplemental CO2 injection to promote dense growth.
• A nutrient-rich substrate containing nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.
• Water temperatures maintained between 22°C and 28°C.

While generally robust, the plant is susceptible to certain issues if aquarium parameters are not stable. Common problems include infestation by hair algae due to nutrient imbalances and chlorosis caused by iron deficiency. Proper maintenance, including regular water changes and controlled dosing of fertilizers, is key to preventing these health issues and ensuring consistent growth.
