Stenocereus eruca, commonly known as the creeping devil, is a remarkable species within the Cactaceae family. It is distinct due to its prostrate growth habit, where the stems grow along the ground, rooting as they extend forward while the older, rear parts of the stem gradually die off, effectively allowing the plant to "crawl" across the desert floor.

The species is endemic to the Baja California Peninsula in Mexico, where it thrives in sandy soils and harsh arid climates. This natural habitat defines the plant's biological needs, as it has evolved to withstand extreme solar radiation and prolonged periods of drought, relying on specialized tissues for water storage.

Botanically, Stenocereus eruca is characterized by long, cylindrical stems heavily armed with stout spines. These spines serve not only for defense against herbivores but also provide a degree of shading for the epidermis. The plant's ability to regenerate via lateral rooting allows it to maintain a stable population in fragmented, low-nutrient environments.

Agronomic management requires a specific approach focusing on drainage. The substrate must be composed mostly of mineral materials like pumice, grit, and sand to prevent the accumulation of excess water. Consistent light exposure is mandatory for healthy development, while irrigation should be reduced to almost zero during the cooler winter months to avoid fungal pathogens.
