The plant develops a dense, carpet-like mat through the expansion of its stolons.
Originating from the tropical regions of Africa, this species has been naturalized in many warm-climate areas globally. It thrives particularly well in coastal environments due to its notable salt tolerance. It is currently cultivated extensively in tropical and subtropical regions across the Americas, Asia, and the Mediterranean basin, serving as a staple in warm-season turf management.
Botanically, the plant is characterized by broad, dark green, blunt-tipped leaves and sturdy stems that withstand mechanical stress. Its root system is deep and fibrous, allowing it to remain viable during periods of moderate drought. The plant’s rapid growth rate allows it to quickly colonize disturbed areas, effectively choking out opportunistic weeds.
For successful cultivation, Stenotaphrum dimidiatum requires full sun exposure and well-draining soil conditions. It is not cold-hardy, and frost can cause significant damage to the foliage.
