Unlike many garden bulbs, this species is noted for its ability to produce flowers directly from the soil with little or no foliage present at the time of anthesis, a trait that gives it its specific epithet, suggesting a resemblance to Colchicum.

The native range of this species extends across the Mediterranean basin, the Caucasus, and parts of Central and Southeastern Europe. In its natural habitat, it thrives in xerophytic conditions, occupying rocky grasslands and open scrublands. Because it is highly adapted to specific ecological niches, it is often considered a rare or protected species, making it a prized subject for specialized bulb gardens and conservation collections.

Botanically, the plant consists of a small, tunicated bulb that produces linear leaves usually following the flowering cycle. The solitary flowers are bright yellow, funnel-shaped, and appear sessile. The plant employs a specialized survival strategy: it grows during the cool, moist months and enters a deep state of dormancy during the heat of summer, which is critical for its metabolic regulation.

Successful cultivation requires strict adherence to its environmental preferences. The soil must be exceptionally well-drained, ideally sandy or stony, with an alkaline to neutral pH. Exposure to full sunlight is non-negotiable for flower bud initiation. Key agronomic practices include:

  • Providing a warm, dry summer rest period.
  • Avoiding any irrigation during the dormant phase.
  • Planting at a shallow depth to prevent bulb rot.
  • Ensuring excellent air circulation to reduce humidity.

Common issues in the garden include fungal pathogens such as Fusarium or Botrytis, which are almost exclusively caused by poor soil drainage. Pests such as bulb mites or wireworms can occasionally infest the bulbs, leading to stunted growth. Maintenance should focus on preventing waterlogging, as the species is remarkably tolerant of drought but highly susceptible to damp conditions that lead to tissue degradation.
