Hill stevia (Stevia collina) is a perennial herb belonging to the Asteraceae family. While often overshadowed by its commercial relative, Stevia rebaudiana, this species shares significant physiological characteristics and botanical properties. It is a distinct member of the Stevia genus, recognized for its adaptation to higher-altitude environments and specific chemical composition found in its foliage.
The plant originates from the rugged, mountainous regions of South America. Its natural habitat is defined by well-drained, nutrient-poor, yet mineral-rich soils. This evolutionary background makes the species particularly resilient to certain environmental stresses, provided that the soil structure allows for rapid water infiltration and prevents waterlogging of the roots.
Botanically, the plant develops into a dense, multi-stemmed structure with opposite leaves. The root system is relatively fibrous and sensitive to physical compaction. The flowering cycle produces characteristic Asteraceae-style floral heads, which are adapted for pollination by insects in their native range. Its growth habit remains largely consistent with typical shrubs of the Stevia genus.
Cultivation requires strict adherence to light and temperature parameters. Optimal growth is observed in locations with high photosynthetic active radiation and daytime temperatures between 22 and 30 degrees Celsius. The soil should be slightly acidic or neutral, enriched with organic matter, but primarily prioritized for drainage. Irrigation management is critical during the vegetative growth phase to ensure consistent health.
The crop is utilized primarily for its sweet compounds, which are secondary metabolites that offer a non-caloric alternative to sucrose. Agronomic risks are largely associated with pathological issues such as root rot and fungal wilt, which manifest under poor drainage conditions. Additionally, sap-sucking insects pose a major threat to leaf quality. Integrated pest management (IPM) strategies, including biological control and careful irrigation scheduling, are recommended for sustainable commercial production.
