Arabian needlegrass (Stipa arabica) is a perennial grass species belonging to the Poaceae family. It is a highly specialized xerophyte, perfectly adapted to thrive in harsh environments characterized by prolonged drought and extreme temperature fluctuations, where conventional crops would fail to survive.
The native range of this species extends across the arid regions of Central and Western Asia, as well as parts of the Middle East. It naturally populates rocky slopes, gravelly plains, and sandy soils. Within agricultural frameworks, it is recognized as a key component of resilient rangelands in semi-arid zones.
Botanically, the plant forms dense tufts with narrow, stiff leaves that are rolled to minimize transpiration. The most distinctive feature is its long, feathery awns on the seeds, which are specialized mechanisms for wind dispersal and self-burial in the soil, ensuring germination after rare, unpredictable rainfall events.
Regarding cultivation, Stipa arabica requires minimal intervention. It thrives in well-drained soils and is highly sensitive to waterlogging, which can cause root rot. It does not require fertilizers and can maintain productivity in soils with low nutrient content, making it a low-input choice for specific agro-ecological projects.
