Charrua needlegrass (lat. Stipa charruana) is a perennial grass species belonging to the Poaceae family. It is a dense, tufted bunchgrass native to South America, specifically noted for its resilience and ability to thrive in open grassland ecosystems where few other plants can establish.
The native range of this species is centered in Uruguay and parts of Argentina. It has evolved in environments with distinct seasonal cycles and high solar exposure, making it an excellent candidate for semi-arid and temperate regions that experience significant temperature fluctuations throughout the year.
Botanically, Stipa charruana features stiff, narrow blades and a fibrous root system that can extend deep into the soil profile. The characteristic feathery inflorescences (panicles) are equipped with long awns that play a vital role in seed dispersal through wind and animal attachment, ensuring successful propagation in native habitats.
When cultivating this species, site selection is crucial. It requires full sun and soil with excellent drainage. Unlike many agricultural crops, it does not tolerate waterlogging.
