Iberian feather grass

Iberian feather grass (Stipa iberica) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Poaceae family. It is a highly specialized steppe grass characterized by its ability to thrive in challenging environments with extreme fluctuations in temperature and soil moisture.

The origin of the species is centered in the Caucasus region and parts of Asia Minor. It typically inhabits rocky slopes, dry grasslands, and sub-alpine meadows, acting as a pioneer species that can colonize terrain unsuitable for more demanding forage crops.

Botanically, this grass forms dense, stiff tussocks with narrow, rolled leaf blades designed to reduce transpiration. The plant produces distinctive feathery awns on its inflorescences, which facilitate wind-based seed dispersal across open landscapes, a key evolutionary adaptation of the genus.

Regarding cultivation, Stipa iberica requires well-drained, sandy, or rocky soil with a neutral to alkaline pH. It is extremely drought-tolerant and performs best under full sun. In terms of agronomic practice, it is largely maintenance-free, requiring protection from overgrazing and competition from aggressive invasive weeds during its establishment phase.

The economic value of this crop lies in its role in environmental management, particularly for soil conservation and erosion control on disturbed slopes. Furthermore, it is increasingly valued in sustainable landscaping as a decorative element that requires minimal irrigation and no chemical inputs.
