Lessing's needle grass (Stipa lessingiana) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Poaceae family. In agronomy, it is recognized as a staple grass species of the Eurasian steppe biomes, playing a vital role in maintaining the structure and stability of semi-arid grasslands.
The native range of this species extends across the steppe and semi-desert zones of Eastern Europe, Southern Russia, Central Asia, and Kazakhstan. Being a true xerophyte, it is perfectly adapted to climates characterized by severe summer drought and significant annual temperature fluctuations.
Botanically, it forms dense, compact bunches of narrow, often involute leaves, reaching a height of 30–70 cm. The most distinguishing feature is the long, feathery awn attached to the seed, which utilizes wind dispersal and an active drilling mechanism to penetrate the soil surface, ensuring efficient seedling establishment.
Regarding soil requirements, Lessing's needle grass thrives on light-textured, alkaline, or chestnut soils. It requires full sunlight and possesses a remarkable ability to withstand extreme moisture deficits. In terms of agronomic practice, it is best managed through rotational grazing to prevent overgrazing, which can easily destroy the fragile steppe balance.
The primary economic use is as forage for livestock, particularly during the early spring season:

The plant is relatively resilient to typical agricultural pests; however, it can be susceptible to rust fungi and smut under conditions of high humidity or poor ventilation. Ranchers should monitor the grazing calendar carefully, as the sharp awns can cause physical harm to animals' mouths and eyes once the seeds reach maturity in the summer.
