It is a natural intergeneric hybrid resulting from the crossing of Achnatherum (needlegrass) and Oryzopsis (ricegrass), which gives it a unique combination of extreme drought tolerance and resilience characteristic of wild steppe grasses.
The plant originates from the western regions of North America, where it thrives in natural, open, and well-drained environments. Its native range includes mountainous and foothills areas, where it has evolved to survive in challenging habitats, such as rocky slopes and arid landscapes with high temperature fluctuations.
Botanically, it is a bunchgrass characterized by narrow, rigid foliage and distinctive panicle inflorescences.
