Striga aspera, commonly known as hairy witchweed, is a parasitic plant belonging to the Orobanchaceae family. It is a significant agricultural pest that targets the roots of cereal crops such as sorghum, pearl millet, and maize, causing severe stunting and substantial yield losses in affected areas.
This species is native to tropical Africa and is primarily found in savannah regions. Its distribution is closely linked to environments where subsistence agriculture is practiced on marginal lands, as the parasite thrives in nutrient-poor and sandy soils typical of these ecosystems.
Botanically, Striga aspera is characterized by its rough, hairy stems and small, narrow leaves. As a hemiparasitic plant, it is capable of photosynthesis but relies heavily on the host for water and mineral nutrients via specialized root structures called haustoria, which penetrate the host's vascular system.
