Striga bilabiata is a species of parasitic plant belonging to the family Orobanchaceae. Often referred to as "witchweed," this organism is an obligate hemiparasite, meaning it must attach to the roots of a host plant to obtain water and nutrients, even though it possesses some chlorophyll and is capable of limited photosynthesis.
The plant is native to sub-Saharan Africa. It has established itself as a significant agricultural threat across tropical regions, particularly where intensive farming of cereals such as maize, sorghum, and millet is practiced. Its distribution is heavily linked to the presence of compatible host species and specific soil conditions prevalent in these tropical ecosystems.
Botanically, Striga bilabiata features small, hair-covered stems and distinctively shaped, two-lipped flowers. The life cycle is complex; seeds remain dormant in the soil for years and only germinate when they detect specific chemical cues (strigolactones) released by the roots of a nearby host plant, ensuring that the parasite successfully finds a food source.
Agronomic management of this species is challenging. Control strategies focus on integrated pest management (IPM) practices, including:
- Crop rotation with non-host "trap crops" that induce "suicidal germination."
- Application of balanced fertilizers, particularly nitrogen, to reduce the infestation level.

By siphoning resources from the host, it stunts growth and significantly decreases the yield of staple food crops. Because it causes damage below the soil surface before the weed even becomes visible, it remains a persistent challenge for food security in the affected regions.
