It thrives in diverse climates, ranging from open grasslands to cultivated agricultural areas where host density is sufficient for the parasite to establish a connection.
Botanically, this plant is an annual herb characterized by its glandular, hairy stems and narrow leaves. Its reproductive strategy is highly aggressive, involving the production of massive quantities of microscopic seeds. These seeds remain dormant in the soil, germinating only when they detect specific chemical exudates released by the roots of a potential host plant.
Agronomic management of Striga euphrasioides is notoriously difficult. Standard techniques include the use of trap crops—plants that trigger the germination of Striga seeds without allowing them to attach—as well as crop rotation, nitrogen fertilization to suppress parasite growth, and the rigorous use of clean, certified seeds to prevent the spread of the parasite.
