The plant originates from the tropical and semi-arid regions of Africa. Its geographical distribution is closely tied to the cultivation of sorghum, millet, and maize, which serve as its primary hosts. The environmental conditions favoring the growth of this parasite include low fertility soils, high temperatures, and cyclical moisture patterns, which are typical of many smallholder farming landscapes in sub-Saharan Africa.
The botanical profile of the species is defined by its narrow, linear leaves and characteristic parasitic attachment mechanisms known as haustoria.
