By attaching to the root systems of host plants, it drains essential nutrients and water, often leading to severe yield reductions or total crop failure in infested fields.
The native distribution of this species is primarily centered in the tropical regions of Africa. It thrives in arid and semi-arid climates, typically found in savannah ecosystems. Its presence is strongly associated with traditional agricultural lands where cereals such as sorghum, pearl millet, and maize are cultivated as staple food crops.
Botanically, Striga macrantha is characterized by a slender, erect stem and linear leaves. It derives its name from its relatively large, conspicuous flowers, which differentiate it from smaller members of the Striga genus. Its life cycle is biologically synchronized with the host, ensuring that it only initiates growth when a compatible host root is nearby.
Regarding soil and climatic requirements, the plant is well-adapted to nutrient-poor, sandy soils. It does not require specific soil fertility for its own development, as it secures resources directly from the host. Its seeds remain dormant in the soil for years until chemical signals (strigolactones) from host roots trigger the germination process.
