Strychnos cocculoides, often referred to as the monkey orange, is a deciduous tree belonging to the Loganiaceae family. Known for its distinctively large, round fruits with a hard, woody shell, this species is highly valued in its native African habitat. It typically reaches a moderate height, featuring a spreading crown that provides significant shade in semi-arid environments.
Originating from the tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, this plant is naturally found in savannas, woodland mosaics, and rocky hillsides. It has evolved to thrive in environments with distinct wet and dry seasons, demonstrating excellent drought tolerance. Its range stretches across countries such as Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, and parts of South Africa, where it remains a crucial wild fruit resource.
Botanically, the tree is characterized by its corky, thick bark which provides protection against wildfires. The leaves are opposite, simple, and leathery, an adaptation to mitigate moisture loss. The fruit is a large berry containing numerous seeds embedded in a pulp that, while tart, is widely consumed when fully ripe. The tree's root system is deep and expansive, ensuring survival during prolonged droughts.
