Littleleaf snowberry

Littleleaf snowberry (Symphoricarpos microphyllus) is a deciduous shrub belonging to the Caprifoliaceae family. As indicated by its name, it is distinguished by its small leaves and compact growth habit, which sets it apart from larger species within the same genus.

The plant is native to the high-altitude mountainous regions of Mexico and Central America. Because of its origin, it is naturally adapted to cool and temperate environments. In cultivation, it performs best in regions where climatic conditions mimic its mountainous natural habitat, preferring cool, well-ventilated locations.

Botanically, Symphoricarpos microphyllus is characterized by thin, flexible branches that form a dense, rounded crown. Its leaves are opposite and ovate, contributing to a refined texture. The small, bell-shaped flowers are followed by translucent, white-to-pinkish berries that remain on the shrub well into the late autumn, providing high ornamental interest.

While the shrub is relatively hardy, it benefits from partial shade in extremely hot regions. Maintenance involves light pruning to manage density and shape, which is typically best performed during late winter or early spring before new growth appears.
