Heart-leaved comfrey (Symphytum cordatum) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Boraginaceae family. It is a distinctive botanical species known for its heart-shaped foliage and preference for the shaded habitats typical of the Carpathian mountain forests.
The origin of this species is centered in Central and Eastern Europe. As a forest-floor plant, it thrives in environments that provide high humidity and protection from direct sunlight. In an agricultural or horticultural context, it is valued for its hardiness and ability to thrive in areas where traditional sun-loving crops would fail to establish.
Botanically, it features a creeping rhizome system that allows for efficient expansion. The plant typically reaches heights of 30 to 50 centimeters. Its characteristic heart-shaped leaves provide dense cover, and the tubular flowers are notable for their color shift during the blooming phase, which adds both ecological and ornamental value to the plant.
Climatic and soil requirements are strictly linked to moisture retention. It prefers nutrient-rich, humus-heavy soils with consistent irrigation.
