The native distribution of this species spans across East Asia, including Japan, the Korean Peninsula, and parts of the Russian Far East. In cultivation, it is classified as a wetland obligate, thriving in environments that mimic its natural habitat: marshes, seepages, and shaded, moisture-rich forest floors.
The plant exhibits large, kidney-shaped leaves that can reach significant sizes once the flowering phase concludes. Its reproductive structure consists of a spadix sheltered by a fleshy, hooded spathe, which often appears in muted, earthy tones. This structure serves as a thermal chamber for pollinating insects during cold temperatures.
Agricultural requirements focus heavily on hydration and substrate quality. For optimal growth, soil must be rich in organic matter and maintain a consistently high moisture level throughout the growing season. While it is hardy in its native climate, it requires partial shade to protect its broad foliage from heat stress and excessive transpiration.
Primarily utilized in ornamental horticulture, this species is ideal for bog gardens and the edges of natural ponds. Regarding health, it is generally robust and rarely suffers from severe pest infestations. However, stagnant conditions can occasionally predispose the root system to rot, necessitating attention to proper site selection and soil structure.
