Henry lilac

Henry lilac (Syringa henryi) is a distinguished hybrid shrub belonging to the Oleaceae family. Created as a cross between Syringa villosa and Syringa reflexa, this botanical hybrid combines the hardiness of its parents with elegant, pendulous flower panicles. It is a prized choice for temperate gardens where reliability and aesthetic appeal are highly valued.

The origin of this hybrid traces back to early 20th-century botanical breeding, aimed at introducing new traits into ornamental gardening. Its parental lineage originates from the mountainous regions of China, which contributes to the species' remarkable climatic adaptability. Today, it is recognized globally by horticulturists as a robust and long-lived garden shrub.

Botanically, this shrub grows to a height of 3–4 meters, featuring dense, dark green foliage and a vigorous branching habit. The flowers are produced in large, somewhat lax panicles that can appear in shades of violet, pink, or lilac. A notable feature is the timing of the bloom, which generally occurs in early summer, effectively extending the lilac season in the landscape.

Cultivation requires a site with full sun exposure and well-drained, fertile soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Proper maintenance involves annual pruning immediately after flowering to remove spent blooms and maintain structural integrity.
