Peking lilac

Syringa pekinensis

Description

Peking lilac (Syringa pekinensis) is an exquisite woody shrub or small tree belonging to the Oleaceae family. Distinct from the common lilac, this species is highly valued for its striking, exfoliating bark and elegant, tree-like growth habit, which adds architectural interest to any garden setting.

Native to Northern China, the plant is naturally adapted to mountain environments and variable climates. Because of its robust nature and tolerance to urban pollutants, it has become a popular choice for landscape designers working in temperate zones, offering a unique aesthetic that changes throughout the seasons.

Botanically, it typically reaches heights of 5 to 7 meters. Its foliage is slender and dark green, providing a lush backdrop for the small, fragrant, creamy-white flowers that appear in large panicles during early summer. The peeling bark, often reddish-brown or copper, adds color even in the winter months.

Cultivation requires a site with full sun exposure and well-drained, nutrient-rich soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Maintenance involves regular watering during the first few years to establish the root system, annual pruning to shape the canopy, and mulching to conserve soil moisture and suppress weeds.

The Peking lilac is primarily used as an ornamental specimen in parks, private estates, and urban boulevards. Growers should be aware of specific pests and diseases that may affect its health, ensuring timely intervention if necessary:

  • Powdery mildew on leaves
  • Lilac borer infestations
  • Scale insects affecting the bark
  • Verticillium wilt in waterlogged soils
