The Preston lilac (Syringa prestoniae) is a significant hybrid ornamental shrub belonging to the Oleaceae family. This species was developed in the early 20th century by Canadian horticulturalist Isabella Preston, who crossed the Syringa villosa and Syringa komarowii species. The resulting hybrid is renowned for its superior cold hardiness and striking floral display.

Originally developed in Canada, the Preston lilac is widely cultivated across North America and various European regions with temperate climates. Its geographic range is dictated by its ability to thrive in harsh, cold-winter zones where it serves as a reliable performer in both public parks and private landscapes, consistently providing aesthetic value despite seasonal challenges.

Botanically, it forms a large, upright shrub that can reach heights of 3 to 4 meters. The foliage is relatively large and distinctly veined, often with slight pubescence. The most defining botanical feature is its late-season bloom.
