Onionwood (Syzygium alliiligneum) is an evergreen tree species belonging to the Myrtaceae family. It is distinct for its dense foliage and the unique property of its timber, which emits a strong garlic or onion scent when freshly cut or bruised. This botanical curiosity makes it a noteworthy member of the diverse genus Syzygium found within the tropical rainforest biomes.

The native distribution of Syzygium alliiligneum is restricted to the tropical rainforests of North East Queensland, Australia. This region provides the high-humidity environment and consistent temperatures necessary for the plant's development. As a rainforest species, it thrives in shaded or semi-shaded understory environments where the forest canopy provides protection from harsh, direct sunlight.
