Austrian viper's-grass (lat. Takhtajaniantha austriaca) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. Known for its remarkable resilience, this species is considered a valuable, though underexploited, component of steppe ecosystems, possessing significant potential for arid-land agriculture and soil stabilization projects.
The native range of the species extends across the steppe and forest-steppe zones of Eurasia, from Central Europe to Central Asia. The plant naturally thrives in open, sunny habitats with poor, skeletal, or rocky soils. Its evolutionary development as a xerophyte allows it to withstand extreme temperature fluctuations and severe drought conditions typical of steppe climates.
Botanically, the plant features a robust taproot system and a basal rosette of linear-lanceolate leaves. The flowering stems grow upright, reaching heights of 20 to 40 cm, and bear bright yellow flower heads. These structures are efficient at capturing energy and reproducing effectively during the short moisture-rich periods in early spring.
