Snow tansy

Snow tansy (Tanacetum niveum) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. It is widely recognized in horticulture for its distinct silvery, finely dissected foliage and its profuse display of daisy-like white flowers that appear during the summer season.

Native to the mountainous regions of Turkey and neighboring areas in Western Asia, the plant is naturally adapted to rugged, rocky terrains. This evolutionary history makes it an excellent candidate for low-maintenance landscapes, as it possesses strong drought tolerance and thrives in poor soil conditions.

Botanically, Tanacetum niveum is characterized by its compact, shrubby habit and dense white tomentose (hairy) covering on leaves and stems. The flower heads are clustered in flat-topped corymbs. The contrast between the silvery foliage and the clean white blossoms gives the plant its common name and makes it a highly desirable architectural element in garden design.

Cultivation requirements focus primarily on light and drainage. The species demands full sun exposure to maintain its compact shape and silver color. It performs poorly in damp, heavy soils; therefore, planting in raised beds or well-drained, gritty substrates is essential to prevent root rot, which is the most significant threat to the plant's health.
