Description
Square bamboo (Tetragonocalamus quadriangularis, synonym Chimonobambusa quadrangularis) is a distinct species belonging to the grass family Poaceae. This plant is globally recognized for its exceptional morphological feature: the culms are distinctly square or rectangular in cross-section with prominent ridges along the nodes.
Native to the subtropical mountain regions of China and Japan, this species thrives in humid forest environments. It is adapted to moderate climatic conditions, requiring protection from severe frost and intense direct sunlight in the hottest parts of the day. Its natural range has historically been linked to high-altitude valleys where moisture levels remain high throughout the growing season.
Botanically, it is a sympodial (clumping) bamboo that grows to a height of approximately 3 to 5 meters. The stems are exceptionally dense and strong compared to round-stemmed species. The nodes are often characterized by small, ring-like spikes or protrusions. The leaves are persistent, lanceolate, and provide dense cover, making it a visually striking ornamental grass.
Agricultural success depends on providing fertile, well-draining, and slightly acidic soil. The plant requires consistent irrigation to maintain its growth rate, especially during the active spring shooting season. While it is hardy in many respects, it does not tolerate waterlogged soils, which can lead to root rot. Mulching is highly recommended to protect shallow rhizomes and maintain soil moisture levels.

The natural shape of the stem eliminates the need for manual shaping, making it a sustainable material for specialty construction.
