While not a conventional crop in agricultural terms, it serves as a critical biological component in forest management and environmental assessment. Its presence is often used by agronomists and ecologists as a biological marker for healthy, stable, and humid forest microclimates.

The native range of this species extends across the Northern Hemisphere, covering significant portions of North America, Europe, and Asia. It prefers temperate climates where atmospheric humidity remains consistently high. Cultivation for industrial use is negligible, yet it is highly valued in botanical research, specialized nursery production for terrariums, and restorative landscaping projects.

Agricultural or horticultural management involves strict moisture control and shade regulation. Avoiding direct sunlight is essential, as high levels of UV radiation lead to rapid desiccation and the collapse of the moss colony.
