The marsh fern, known botanically as Thelypteris palustris, is a perennial fern species belonging to the family Thelypteridaceae. Within agronomic and landscaping sectors, this plant is recognized as a hardy wetland species, highly efficient in colonizing wet, marshy habitats where many other cultivated plants would fail due to waterlogging.

Native to temperate regions across the Northern Hemisphere, the marsh fern is widely distributed in Europe, Asia, and North America. It naturally occupies habitats such as fens, marshes, and the margins of water bodies. Its ability to thrive in these specialized ecosystems makes it an important focus for restoration ecology and ornamental aquatic landscaping.

The morphology of the plant is characterized by a long, creeping rhizome that supports the development of slender, upright fronds reaching up to 70 centimeters in height. The foliage is typically light green and bipinnate, with sori (spore-bearing structures) protected by a delicate indusium, which is a key diagnostic feature of the species during the reproductive phase.

Cultivation of Thelypteris palustris requires strict adherence to soil moisture and acidity levels. The plant performs best in acidic, organic-rich peat soils. In terms of agronomic practice, maintaining a consistently high water table is essential; the plant cannot tolerate drought, and the soil must remain saturated or at least consistently moist throughout the growing season.

The primary use of the marsh fern is ornamental, particularly for stabilizing the banks of ponds or creating bog gardens. It is generally resistant to most common agricultural diseases, although improper drainage can lead to root rot. Pests, such as slugs and snails, are occasional threats during the emergence of spring fronds, requiring standard integrated pest management approaches if numbers become excessive.
