Thesium humile is a small annual herbaceous plant belonging to the Santalaceae family. It is distinct due to its hemiparasitic nature, meaning it is capable of photosynthesis but supplements its nutrition by attaching its roots to those of neighboring host plants to extract water and essential minerals via haustoria.
This species is native to the Mediterranean basin, stretching across Southern Europe, Northern Africa, and Western Asia. It thrives in arid and semi-arid environments, commonly found on rocky terrain, sandy soils, and abandoned agricultural lands where it can easily secure host plants for survival.
Morphologically, the plant is typically low-growing, reaching heights between 5 and 25 centimeters. It features simple, linear, or lanceolate leaves arranged alternately along the stems. The flowers are small, often greenish or yellowish-white, and grouped in terminal spike-like inflorescences. The root system is specifically adapted to detect and penetrate the root tissues of grasses and other nearby vegetation.
In terms of agricultural suitability, Thesium humile is not a commercial crop but rather an ecological component of wild vegetation. Its agronomic presence is often associated with pastures or poorly managed fields. It prefers well-drained, lime-rich soils and is sensitive to heavy waterlogging, which limits its spread in overly irrigated agricultural areas.
