Thismia rodwayi, commonly known as the fairy lantern, is a rare non-photosynthetic plant belonging to the Burmanniaceae family. Unlike conventional crops, this plant is a mycoheterotroph, meaning it derives its nutrients by parasitizing underground fungi that are associated with the root systems of nearby trees.
The plant originates from the temperate rainforests of Tasmania, mainland Australia, and New Zealand. Its natural range is restricted to habitats with stable, moist leaf litter, which provides the necessary conditions for the fungal networks that the plant requires for survival.
Botanically, the plant is characterized by a lack of chlorophyll and leaves. Its most distinctive feature is its small, lantern-shaped flowers that emerge from the soil.
