Blue Tillandsia (Tillandsia cyanea x Tillandsia pretiosa) is a highly attractive hybrid belonging to the Bromeliaceae family. This perennial herbaceous plant is an epiphyte, natively growing on tree branches or rocky outcrops in the rainforests of South America, primarily Ecuador, utilizing these substrates for mechanical support rather than nutrient intake.

In a controlled agricultural or professional horticultural setting, the plant requires conditions that simulate its native tropical habitat. Success depends on maintaining high atmospheric humidity levels, typically between 60% and 75%, and a stable ambient temperature range of 18–25 degrees Celsius throughout the year.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by a dense rosette of narrow, grass-like leaves. Its most distinctive feature is a large, flattened, spike-like inflorescence of deep pink color. Over several weeks, small, sky-blue to violet flowers emerge sequentially from the pink bracts. The 'pretiosa' hybrid is particularly prized for its larger, more vibrant flower spikes.

The cultivation technique differs significantly from terrestrial crops. Instead of soil, a well-draining epiphyte mix containing orchid bark, sphagnum moss, and charcoal is used. Irrigation is primarily conducted through misting and by filling the central tank of the rosette with soft, dechlorinated water, while avoiding waterlogging the roots, which can quickly lead to fungal decay.

Additionally, poor ventilation and stagnant water are the leading causes of rot, requiring careful management of the plant's environment to ensure vitality.
