Torenia bicolor

Torenia bicolor is a delicate herbaceous plant belonging to the Linderniaceae family. Known for its distinct bicolor flowers, this species is highly valued in horticulture for its ability to brighten up shady garden spots, hanging baskets, and decorative containers where many other flowering plants struggle to thrive.

Originating from the tropical and subtropical forests of Asia, this plant has adapted to humid, low-light environments. In agricultural and ornamental practice, it is treated as a tender annual in cooler climates. Its natural habitat dictates the need for consistent moisture and protection from the intense, direct afternoon sun which can damage its foliage.

Botanically, Torenia bicolor is characterized by its branching growth habit and opposite, serrated leaves. The flowers are the primary ornamental feature, displaying a striking contrast between the primary petal color and the throat, which is often bright yellow. The plant typically reaches a height of 15–30 cm, making it an excellent choice for border edges and container displays.
